How the tape desk actually works
Every holding in the book passes through the same six part discipline. The names below are also
the six service lines the office offers to partners, each described in full on the services page.
The work begins with Portfolio Strategy and Asset Allocation, where the
office sets the durable mix between growth holdings, income holdings and cash reserves. Nothing
is bought before that mix is agreed in writing, because allocation is the decision that explains
most of a long run outcome. From there the office moves into
Private Equity Holdings, taking minority or control positions in
operating companies it can hold for a decade or more, usually in sectors where the management
team wants a patient partner rather than a fast exit.
Real assets carry their own lane through Real Estate Investments, where
the office favors income producing commercial and residential property in stable Canadian
markets, valuing the durability of rent over the thrill of appreciation. Alongside property sits
Fixed Income Management, the quiet floor of the portfolio, built from
investment grade bonds, term deposits and laddered instruments that keep the office liquid when
markets turn unfriendly.
Around the holdings themselves run two supporting disciplines. Capital
Advisory is the work the office does with partner families and founders on structure,
governance and succession before capital ever moves. Shareholder
Reporting is the work that follows, translating the ledger into clear quarterly statements
so every partner can see exactly what the office holds and why. Together these six lines form a
complete loop, and the tape on the desk is simply the record of it.
